MIAMI – A sailboat was completely destroyed Tuesday after a fire near Dinner Key Marina in the Coconut Grove area of Miami, authorities said.
Miami Fire Rescue arrived around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, and found heavy smoke and flames coming from a 17-foot sailboat called the Master Chief, anchored in Biscayne Bay.
Firefighters from Miami Fireboat arrived and began extinguishing the fire. Authorities said additional firefighters were taken by the Dinner Key Marina staff to the scene to help with searching the waters for possible victims.
While crews were battling the blaze two men were found on a nearby boat, MFR officials said.
According the boat owner, they were preparing a meal on the outdoor cooktop when they feel asleep. Awoken by the smoke, the two men were able to jump ship before the entire sailboat was consumed in flames, authorities said.
The men were able to swim to a nearby boat and wait until MFR crews arrived. Both men were evaluated by paramedics and remained at the scene to speak to investigators. They were not hurt in the incident, officials said.
The cause of the fire was ruled accidental.
