Shark sightings force brief evacuation of Fort Lauderdale Beach

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A pair of shark sightings forced the brief evacuation of a section of Fort Lauderdale Beach on Friday afternoon.

Witnesses say two sharks were reportedly seen just off the beach near Sunrise Boulevard around 1 p.m.

"I said, 'Look behind you. There's a bigger one.' And people were, of course, freaking out," one man said.

Jimmy Douglas was on the beach when one of the sharks passed by and sent video of it to Local 10.

With the sharks so close to shore, lifeguards in the area ordered those in the ocean to exit the water and head back to the beach.

"I didn't run in the water after that," one woman said.

The evacuation lasted about 30 minutes before visitors were allowed to return to the surf.
