Bullet narrowly avoids student at Frances S. Tucker Elementary School

Superintendent says teacher, 4 students with disabilities inside classroom

MIAMI ā€“ A stray bullet that pierced the window of a classroom at a Coconut Grove elementary school narrowly missed a student, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said.

Miami-Dade school police said two bullets struck the window of a portable classroom at Frances S. Tucker Elementary School, but nobody was hurt.

"The bullet went through the glass, hit the opposite wall and landed on the floor, a foot away from a child," Carvalho said.

A teacher and four students with disabilities were in the classroom at the time, Carvalho said.

Tavaris Williams Jr., 10, said he heard the gunshots before his teacher told everyone to get down.

"We waited for the police to come," he told Local 10 News. "Then we left and went to another classroom."

Williams' grandmother, Donna Clarit, said he panicked and started having trouble breathing.

It is the second shooting outside a Miami-Dade County public school in as many days. Shots were fired Wednesday outside Miami Carol City Senior High School. CedricĀ Admas, 18, was arrested in connection with that shooting, but another man, Stanley Ragin, 19, remains at large.

"Catastrophic loss was by chance, by luck, avoided," Carvalho said.

The school was placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Classes resumed as scheduled at Frances S. Tucker Elementary School.
