Small number on drivers licenses bugs Floridians

State began asking for secondary number in March

MIAMI – Many South Floridians struggle to read a newly-needed number on the back of their drivers licenses.

"I've got 20/20 vision but it's very hard to read," said George Amicar.

While hundreds of drivers race to Department of Motor Vehicle officers to wait in long lines, 6,000 drivers a day renew and replace their drivers licenses online. But since March, the state has asked for the drivers license number and one on the back that some say is too small to read.

"It made it difficult for me to even check my own license," said Amicar.

"It's small," added Nicole Guzman.

State records say drivers have complained about the small print, calling it "impossible to read without a microscope."

Florida began asking for the second number to safeguard personal information on its website.

"It's a very small number," said Modesto Burgos, a spokesman for the Florida DMV.

Burgos said they are unable to increase the size of the font.

"I mean, that's crazy," said Amicar.

The state is considering a new security system for its website that may be in place by the end of the year.
