The city said that all the children are safe and asked that parents refrain from going to the school.
A later tweet claims the fire appeared to be electrical in nature and that crews are currently investigating.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said an air handler on the second floor caused a light haze in three classrooms.
According to Jachles, about 2,500 students and staff were evacuated from the building and were allowed back inside shortly before 12:30 p.m.
