Surveillance video released in JW Marriott Marquis carjacking

Police: 7 pedestrians hit by stolen Lexus

MIAMI – Police have released surveillance video from Wednesday's violent carjacking at the JW Marriott Marquis hotel in downtown Miami.

The video shows a woman pull up to the hotel's valet in a Lexus SUV at about 10:30 a.m. Two valets come up to help her while another man, who police say is 50-year-old Alberto Ruiz, is spotted nearby casing the scene.

As the woman gets out of her car, Ruiz jumps into the driver's seat.

Two valets who were behind the SUV were struck as Ruiz reversed to try to get away. Ruiz then gets wedged between two other vehicles that were also in the valet ramp, and he couldn't go anywhere for quite some time.

Other valets walked up to the Lexus to try to speak with Ruiz. Eventually he gets away, running into several other vehicles and sideswiping several pedestrians.

Police said seven people suffered injuries during the getaway, including a valet who suffered serious injuries. He remains at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Ruiz faces carjacking, attempted murder, aggravated battery and resisting arrest charges. He was arrested late Wednesday night at a hotel off Flagler Street in Little Havana.

Police said Ruiz has carried out similar crimes in the downtown Miami area before.
