Deputies arrest 30-year-old man in connection to Sept. 1 fatal hit-and-run

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – Deputies say they arrested a 30-year-old man in connection to a hit-and-run incident where a Pompano Beach man was struck and killed.

At 3 a.m. on Sept. 1, deputies said Jorge Escalante, 29, was fatally struck after crossing the road in the 800 block of West Sample Road. Authorities said the driver of the car failed to stop after hitting Escalante.

Detectives spent several hours afterwards collecting evidence and processing the scene. They were able to develop a vehicle description which they believe to be a Toyota Camry, or a similar-make car.

On Friday, detectives found a beige 1995 Toyota Camry in the Highland Park neighborhood of Pompano Beach, which deputies said matched the description of the suspect's vehicle.

Deputies said the vehicle was missing the driver's side view mirror and had sustained damage to the driver's side fender and door.

Shortly after, the driver of that vehicle, 30-year-old Edward Thomas, contacted investigators wanting to make a statement. Once the interview concluded, detectives placed Thomas under arrest.

Thomas is facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in injuries and driving with a suspended license, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
