A Boynton Beach police officer shot and wounded a suspect who brandished a handgun while attempting to flee a vehicle during a traffic stop, police said.
The shooting happened early Thursday in the 400 block of Northwest First Avenue.
Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said officers stopped a gold Honda Accord about 2:30 a.m. The car was occupied by five people, all in their teens and early 20s.
Slater said one of the occupants got out of the car and flashed a gun at an officer.
That officer fired his gun, wounding the suspect.
The suspect was taken to Delray Medical Center.
Slater said the suspect's gun and three shell casings were recovered.
She said the officer wasn't injured and will be placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
