Teen accused of stealing car with baby inside to remain in jail

Brian Jean, 16, faces kidnapping, child neglect, grand theft charges

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 16-year-old boy accused of stealing a car with a sleeping baby inside faced a Broward County judge Saturday morning.

Judge Sharon Zeller ordered that Brian Jean remain in secure detention for 21 days.

Jean was arrested Friday on multiple charges, including kidnapping, child neglect and grand theft.

Fort Lauderdale police Detective Tracy Figone said Jean was identified by fingerprints found in the stolen car.

Figone said a woman went inside the LaundroMax to drop off laundry and left her car's engine on Monday when Jean drove off in the car. Sleeping in the back seat was 10-month-old Yareli Velasco.

The stolen car was later found near McNab Road and Powerline Road. Yareli was safe inside.

Jean is being held at a juvenile detention facility.
