Teen charged in 2 break-ins at Sprint store in Pompano Beach

Surveillance video shows teen smashing window, stealing cellphones

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A teenage boy is facing charges after breaking into a cellphone store twice this week in Pompano Beach, deputies said.

Demetris Wilson, 16, faces two counts of burglary and one count of robbery.

The first incident happened about 3:50 a.m. Sunday at a Sprint store on Atlantic Boulevard.

Deputies released surveillance video Thursday that showed a teenage boy pacing outside the store for several minutes before throwing a rock at the store window.

The window didn't break the first time, and the teen is seen throwing a second rock at the glass, shattering the door.

The boy then ran inside the store and yanked phones off of displays.

Deputies believe that Wilson also broke into the store about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Authorities said Wilson had 22 warrants out for various crimes, including carjacking, robbery, theft and violation of probation.

Deputies recognized Wilson from past encounters and said his mother positively identified her son from a still photograph from the surveillance video.

Wilson was taken into custody Thursday and confessed to stealing several cellphones, including iPhones and Samsung phones. Deputies said he claimed to have sold all the phones to people on the street.

Investigators said Wilson also confessed to a recent robbery at a Pompano Beach Walmart.

Deputies said Wilson and Anthony McCleod, 18, snatched a woman's car keys at the store March 16 and took off in her car. McCleod was arrested last month.

Wilson is charged with carjacking in that crime.
