Tidal flooding hits South Beach

Broken water main compounds tidal flooding on Alton Road

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Tidal flooding on South Beach is about as predictable as the tides themselves.

Water flooded Alton Road and 10th Street on Wednesday morning, partly due to a water main break two blocks away at 8th Street. The main that cracked was later repaired.

Miami Beach is spending at least $200 million on overhauling an aging drainage system with more pumps, higher sea walls, more storage for storm runoff and measures to keep seasonal high tides from flooding streets and neighborhoods.

The project is expected to be complete by the summer of 2015.
