Tri-Rail service resumes normal operations after derailment

Derailed train removed from tracks Saturday

Tri-Rail resumed its normal operations Monday after a train derailed early Thursday in Pompano Beach.

South Florida Regional Transportation Authority spokeswoman Bonnie Arnold said the derailed train was removed from the tracks Saturday and crews replaced 500 railroad ties.

According to Arnold, three of the six cars derailed Thursday after the northbound train struck debris on the track between McNab Road and Atlantic Boulevard.

Of the 56 people on the train when it went off the track, one man was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

One engine caught fire, spilling about 2,200 gallons of diesel fuel onto the track.

Passengers on the train were bused to the next station north in Pompano Beach, but the derailment affected all Tri-Rail passengers who depend on the trains to get to work. Passengers traveling in either direction had to take buses from the Cypress Creek station to the Pompano Beach station.

Arnold said trains must slow to 10 mph when they pass through the area of the derailment.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
