2 police cars burned in northeast Miami-Dade County

Investigators believe someone targeted officers

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Two police cars were found burned in northeast Miami-Dade County early Friday morning.

The incident happened about 5 a.m. at a townhouse complex.

One of the burned cars is a Hallandale Beach police cruiser. The other is a Miami-Dade police cruiser.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, but police said they have no doubt that the victims were targeted because they work in law enforcement.

"Certainly this could have been much worse," Lt. John Jenkins with Miami-Dade Police told Local 10 News. "We have a transformer that's right beside the police vehicle. We also have residents who live right behind us and also the officer and his family."

Police said both victims were at home at the time the fires were started.

The Miami-Dade police cruiser is estimated to be worth $28,000 while the Hallandale Beach police car is worth about $23,000.

Federal and local authorities are investigating.
