The John C. HittĀ Library was evacuated and locked down until just before 5 p.m. Officers have not confirmed any person with a weapon, according to UCF officials.

Police urged students to avoid the area while they investigated the claims.

"We're responding to unconfirmed social media reports and we have officers in the building clearing it right now," said UCFPD Chief Richard Beary. "We hope to have the building open in the very near future."

UCF police said in a tweet that officers were responding to the library in reference to a person with a gun. Police later said they received a social media report of a gunwoman at the library and that prompted the library to be locked down.

"All UCFPD hands on deck at the Library as we respond to social media post about gunwoman," UCF Police said in a tweet.

Video and pictures from the scene showed students gathered outside of the library.

Authorities said they encourage anyone who sees suspicious activity to call 911.
