U.S. returns Cuban fugitive wanted on child sex abuse charges in Mexico

Ner Prieto Silverio convicted of molestation in U.S., transferred to Mexican custody to face charges

MIAMI – A Cuban citizen accused of molesting a boy in Mexico was extradited from the United States to face charges Tuesday.

Ner Prieto Silverio, 64, was transferred to Mexican custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at the El Paso border.

Silverio was arrested by Miami-Dade police in April 2000 on a charge of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12. Before he could be prosecuted, Silverio fled to Mexico, where he is accused of sexually abusing a prepubescent boy for more than three years, ICE spokesman Nestor Yglesias said.

When he attempted to re-enter the U.S. on a flight from Mexico City to Miami in 2012, Silverio was promptly arrested, convicted of the U.S. molestation charge and sentenced to five years in prison, Yglesias said.

In March 2013, an immigration judge ordered that Silverio be removed from the country. The Florida Department of Corrections transferred Silverio to ICE custody in February 2015.

"This man was convicted of sexually abusing a child in the U.S. and is wanted on similar charges in Mexico," said Marc J. Moore, field office director for ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations in Miami. "ERO will use every tool at our disposal to ensure such predators are brought to justice, no matter where they commit their crimes or where they try to hide."
