HIALEAH, Fla. – Among the six people killed in the Hialeah shooting rampage was 33-year-old Carlos Gavilanes. The mother of his two children described him as someone who was always there for the people he loved.
"He was an amazing father, an amazing husband, an amazing human being full of life," said Jennifer Kharrazian. "He loved his family, he lived for his children, he lived for me, he lived for everyone, he always had a smile on his face."
Kharrazian has been with Gavilanes for the last 12 years. Together they have two children, 9-year-old Carlito and 2-year-old Victoria. Kharrazian says their son was with Gavilanes when he was fatally shot outside the apartment complex.
"He died going into the apartment, telling my son to run for his life, he saved, he's a hero. He's always going to be like that in my eyes, through his kids eyes," said Kharrazian.
Gavilanes was expected home at 7 o'clock Friday night for a pizza dinner with his kids, but he would never make it through the front door.
"All of a sudden I started hearing shooting, shots being fired across the street…I got this strange feeling and I go outside and I see my son laying on top of his body crying," said Kharrazian.
According to police, Gavilanes was hit by a bullet fired by Pedro Vargas. Neighbors performed CPR on Gavilanes and paramedics also worked to save him, but it was too late.
"I told him to please hold on, to hold on for Victoria, for Carlito, for me, for his family, I told him that I loved him so much," said Kharrazian.
