Sarah Dennis accused of beating son for getting bad grades

Pembroke Pines woman accused of giving son black eye

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – A woman from Pembroke Pines was arrested Tuesday on an aggravated child abuse charge after she beat her son with a belt and punched him multiple times in his left eye for getting bad grades on his report card, an arrest report said.

Pembroke Pines police detectives said the 12-year-old boy met with a guidance counselor after he showed up to school with a black eye.

According to the report, Sarah Dennis, 25, told her son to go to his bedroom and strip down to his underwear after he showed her that he had received three F grades on his interim report card.

The boy told detectives that she then beat him on his back, buttocks and head with a belt and then punched him in the left eye with a closed fist three to four times.

The boy's 11-year-old brother said he was beaten with the belt on his butt as well for getting bad grades. He told detectives that he did not witness his mother beating his brother, but said that Dennis often beats them with the belt or by punching them with closed fists.

The older child said his mother used to "just spank" him, but that she began using the belt and her fists once he got older and could handle the pain more.

According to the report, Dennis denied ever punching her children and said that she was under the impression that her son had gotten the black eye during a fist fight at school.

Despite her claims, detectives said Dennis never reported the black eye to the school or asked how it happened.
