Woman arrested on suspicion of DUI while 2-year-old asleep in SUV

FHP says Colleen Loughman combative with troopers

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A South Florida woman is accused of drunken driving on Interstate 95 while her 2-year-old son was asleep in the backseat of her sport utility vehicle.

Colleen Loughman, 43, tried to avoid Local 10 News reporter Carlos Suarez as she left jail Monday night.

"Please leave me alone," Loughman repeated as she covered her face and walked away.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Loughman's red Kia Sorento was stopped in the northbound emergency lane of I-95 in Fort Lauderdale late Saturday night when a trooper stopped to see if she needed assistance.

The trooper approached the SUV and found Loughman, 43, of Boynton Beach, sitting in the driver's seat with the keys in the ignition and her son sleeping in his child seat in the back. The SUV was also missing its right front tire, and the rim was severely damaged.

According to the report, the trooper asked if she was OK, and Loughman said that she was trying to get home. The trooper wrote in the report that Loughman's breath smelled of alcohol, and her speech was slurred.

The trooper said that the inside of the SUV was disheveled, with paperwork, open food and yogurt scattered all over the front passenger seat and floorboard.

According to the report, Loughman was asked to exit her vehicle, and the trooper noticed that she was unsteady as she walked.

Two other troopers arrived and helped to conduct a field-sobriety test. After Loughman failed and was being taken into custody, Loughman pulled away from the trooper who was trying to handcuff her and tried to push off the hood of the trooper's patrol car, the report said.

Troopers said Loughman was being combative, so they forced her to the ground in order to place her in handcuffs. She suffered "small abrasions" to her knees from the pavement but refused treatment.

According to the report, Loughman told a trooper that she had two Blue Moon beers, three Zanax and one Zolof at dinner.

Loughman was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, child neglect and DUI causing property damage. Her son was released into the custody of his father.
