Woman drives into own day care

Xiomara Martinez slams into Olga's Preschool in Miami

MIAMI – A woman mistakenly hit the accelerator and slammed her car in to the day care she owns in Miami, the woman's daughter said Tuesday.

About 9 a.m., Xiomara Martinez drove her car through Olga's Pre-School & Day Care on SW 107th Avenue near Miller Road.

"It sounded like an explosion," said Leisnier Lam, who immediately ran to see what was going on at the preschool next door. "At first, I couldn't see anything because everything was covered in a white cloud of smoke."

Martinez's daughter said her mother mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brake when another driver honked at her.

Nine children were inside the day care at the time.

"They looked scared. They were crying, all of them," said Lam.

The children were frightened but unharmed. The kids, who were all under the age of 7, then huddled inside a nearby auto shop until they're parents arrived.

"The first thing we did was put the Nickelodeon Channel on and they were there watching it. They were crying because they were shock of what happened but other than that, they were good," said Lam.

Employees spent the rest of the day picking up the mess.

"After everything got cleared up and I saw the car all the way in there, it's surprising that no one was injured," said Lam.

Martinez was taken to the hospital. Her condition was not immediately released.
