Workers finish drilling PortMiami tunnel Monday

The tunnel will connect Dodge Island to Watson Island

MIAMI – Workers finished drilling a tunnel Monday that connects PortMiami's Dodge Island to Watson Island.

The tunnel  has already dug through thousands of feet of rock which will turn into an underground road.

The tunnel is a one billion dollar project, that once complete will connect the MacArthur Causeway to Dodge Island and make a direct link from seaport to highway. Monday's breakthrough completes 18 months of boring of two parallel tunnels, 120 feet under Government Cut.

This will allow cargo trucks easy access to ships and avoid driving through Downtown Miami.

The entire project is expected to open for traffic in summer 2014.
