Larranaga addressed reporters Monday after the Canes missed out on post-season play.

Miami was in the Final Four the previous season and the elite 8 the season before that.

Larranaga said, “I do think our players assumed that. I do think they took winning for granted. If you look at the other teams in the Final Four, Connecticut is a one-seed, San Diego State is a 5-seed, and FAU is an 8-seed. we belong in there. The issue we’ve had, as I’ve explained over and over again is issues that I cannot control.”

Larranaga pointed out that half of the players in college basketball are in the transfer portal.

Larranaga said, “Does that make any sense to anybody? Because that doesn’t make any sense to me.”

Larranaga said many players putting their name in are actually giving up on themselves, saying that they can’t better at a given school.

All of the changes in college basketball have forced many of Larranaga’s colleagues to move from coaching in college basketball because coaching isn’t as much fun.

Larranaga said that coaches aren’t getting the joy of watching players evolve and grow each and every year.

But for him, he still enjoys coaching and practice.

Larranaga said, “I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing. The players are going to keep doing what they’re doing. I don’t have control over that... I love coaching. I love being around the players. I love practice, it’s my favorite time of the day. I’ll keep doing it until practice is no longer my favorite time of the day.”
