2 emerge in Hurricanes quarterback competition

Malik Rosier, Evan Shirreffs taking 1st-team snaps

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami, affectionately known as "Quarterback U," is in the middle of a long QB competition to see who will step in to the spotlight now that Brad Kaaya has left to go pro.

Two candidates have stepped to the foreground of the competition: Malik Rosier and Evan Shirreffs.

"Those guys, at times, have separated themselves," offensive coordinator Thomas Brown said Thursday.

Rosier and Shirreffs have been splitting first-team snaps this week ahead of Saturday's spring scrimmage.

However, the competition is far from over as the Hurricanes wait for dual-threat freshman N'Kosi Perry to arrive on campus.

A successor to Kaaya, the all-time leading passer in UM history, won't likely be named until the fall.

"It's still going to be a long process," said Brown."Everybody gets antsy and wants an answer immediately. Wish I could give you one. It will be a process that plays out until the fall."

Rosier, who started the Miami miracle game against Duke in 2015, said he's been waiting for a shot to be the starter.

"For me, it means everything," he said. "I sat behind Brad for three years, so I kind of waited my turn, and now I get my chance to lead."

Shirreffs also feels ready to be the new star at "Quarterback U."

"Yeah, if given that opportunity, I can take it and run with it and lead this team," he said. "I feel Malik can, too. Whoever coaches feel is more ready for that."

Be it Rosier, Shirreffs or Perry, the winner of the competition will get a chance to shine under the guidance of QB whisperer and 'Canes head coach Mark Richt.
