Hurricanes lose key ACC game to Hokies on Thursday night

The Hurricanes have lost three consecutive games.

BLACKSBURG, Va. ā€“ In a key game in terms of the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division for both teams, the Virginia Tech Hokies defeated the University of Miami Hurricanes 37-16.

Hokies quarterback Jerod Evans capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 34-yard touchdown run that put the nail in UM's coffin.

Virginia Tech had fullback Sam Rogers throw a 13-yard touchdown pass to another fullback, Steven Peoples, for a 30-16 lead in the third quarter.Ā 

The Hokies took control of the game in the third quarter with quarterback Jerod Evans throwing a 12-yard touchdown to Bucky Hodges for a 23-9 lead.

It was the second collaboration for a touchdown between Evans and Hodges on the night.

UM answered with a third quarter score of their own as Brad KaayaĀ threw a 35-yard touchdown to Chris Herndon, which had the 'Canes trailing 23-16.

The 'Canes offense struggled through most of the first half, with quarterback Brad KaayaĀ being hit multiple times, but they finally found the end zone with 19 seconds before the half when KaayaĀ found Braxton BerriosĀ for a 25-yard score.

However, Michael Badgley missed the point-after try, and the 'Canes trailed 16-9 at the half.

The Hokies took a 13-3 lead in the second quarter on a on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Evans to Hodges.

The 'Canes had a chance to take an early lead and score on an easy touchdown on a long pass in the first quarter when KaayaĀ threw a perfect pass to David Njoku who was wide open, but Njoku tripped over his own feet inside the 30-yard line.

UM was forced to settle for a field goal to tie the game at 3.
