Dan Jennings out as Marlins manager

Jennings asked to remain as general manager

MIAMI – Dan Jennings is out as manager of the Miami Marlins.

The team announced the decision during its end-of-season news conference Tuesday.

Marlins President David Sampson said Jennings was asked to return his role as general manager of the team.

"This was a difficult season for all of us," Sampson said.

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria moved Jennings from the general manager position to the clubhouse after firing Mike Redmond in May.

The Marlins (71-91), who entered the year with high expectations, finished the season 20 games under .500.

Jennings was 43-59 at the helm. His only previous coaching experience was at the high school level in the 1980s.

Sampson said Jennings "did a very good thing for the organization by going down there into a very tough situation."

"In our opinion, it was simply what we thought at that time was the right thing for the Marlins to do in order to salvage the 2015 season," Sampson said.

Jennings joined the Marlins as vice president of player personnel in 2002 and was promoted to general manager after the 2013 season.

Sampson said that even while serving as manager, Jennings retained his title as general manager.

"It is true that we've asked Dan, but that's just a nicer verb than telling," Sampson said. "He's signed, and maybe we should have used the verb telling, but we've been with Dan for 14 years and it's just not as nice a word."

The Marlins will begin an extensive search for a new manager.
