Taylor spent time as reporter, assignment desk editor

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. ā€“ Local 10 News is saying goodbye to a cherished member of its team.

Mel Taylor, the morning assignment desk editor and former reporter, is retiring Thursday.Ā

Taylor began his career at WPLGĀ on May 25, 1981, covering some of South Florida's most memorable stories, including Hurricane Andrew and the Elian Gonzalez saga. He also served as the station's education reporter for several years, bringing stories from the classrooms into viewers' homes.Ā

Several of Taylor's reports, including those on Haiti and Miami gang violence, earned him national acclaim. He has been the recipient of Emmy Awards, a Sunshine State Award and a Silver Circle Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.Ā

Taylor has continued his commitmentĀ to exposing the truth as the station's morning assignment editor, keeping the newsroom -- and the community-- up to date with the latest breaking news.

Ā

Some of Taylor's biggest accomplishments have come from outside of the newsroom, when he gets to spend time with his wife, Joy, and their two children. Taylor is also the author of several novels, including a mystery series about a reporter in the Fort Lauderdale area.

He will be greatly missed by the many members of the Local 10 News team he has worked with throughout his career.
