Driver of stolen box truck dies after crashing into several vehicles, authorities say

Driver pronounced dead at scene

MIAMI ā€“ The driver of a stolen box truck was killed Monday after crashing into multiple vehicles, authorities said.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said a Good Samaritan saw the driver of the PCI Solutions truck driving erratically in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 and called the company to report him.

Troopers said the owner answered the phone and said the box truck had just been stolen.

Troopers said the driver side-swept two vehicles on the highway, got onto State Road 112, also known as the Airport Expressway, and exited at Northwest 17th Avenue, where he struck two more vehicles on 40th Street in Miami.

Witnesses told Local 10 News reporter Terrell Forney that they saw the driver of a box truck speeding as he got off the expressway before he crashed into several vehicles and a tree.

A gray SUV overturned, and a couple was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their 4-year-old son was also in the vehicle, but was unharmed.

The driver of the box truck, identified as Charles Lomax, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene.

FHP is investigating and said that troopers were not chasing the truck when it crashed.
