SUV crashes into bus bench in Hollywood

Police say elderly man lost control of vehicle, struck 3 people

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – An SUV crashed into a bus bench early Monday afternoon in Hollywood.

The crash was reported at 3700 Washington St. near Memorial Regional Hospital South.

Hollywood Fire Rescue officials said the patients included a 61-year-old woman and a 59-year-old woman, who had multiple injuries.

Hollywood police spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said an elderly man was behind the wheel of a Honda CRV when he lost control of his vehicle and struck three people.

She said he and the three victims were taken to Memorial Regional, one of whom is listed in serious condition.

"At this point, the investigation is still preliminary. They're not exactly sure what happened, how the elderly drive lost control (or) why he lost control," Grossman said. "We know that we're lucky that only three people were injured and it could have been far worse."

Witnesses told Local 10 News reporter Neki Mohan that at least two of the victims were stuck under the SUV.

Washington Street was shut down from the 3400 block to the 4000 block during the investigation. It reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Investigators with Hollywood police's traffic homicide unit are investigating the crash.
