Erin weakens to tropical depression again

Erin moving across open Atlantic, does not pose a threat to land

MIAMI – The National Hurricane Center says Erin was weakened to a tropical depression again Saturday night as it continued its trek across the Atlantic Ocean.

At 4 p.m. Sunday, Erin was about 1080 miles west-northwest of the Cape Verde Islands with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. It was moving west at 8 mph.

Forecasters said the system will continue to gradually turn toward the west-northwest. This general motion is expected for the next couple of days.

Little change in strength is forecast on Sunday, and Erin could become a remnant low on Monday, according to NHC.

No advisories or watches were in effect.
