Stormy weather could bring serious flooding to Fort Lauderdale area

Wave wall hopes to keep water out as weather approaches

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Stormy weather is on the way, adding in a king tide on Fort Lauderdale Beach. There's reason to be concerned.

"The water will basically go up to the businesses," one woman said.

Huge waves from Hurricane Sandy in 2012 damaged A1A, then a few weeks later more severe weather caused a section of the road to collapse. That prompted officials to fix the issue. An $11.8 million rebuilding project will stop overflowing from happening.

But just this past December, waves went over the temporary barrier that was supposed to protect A1A while construction is underway.

"It was really horrible, splashing all over," one man said.

Progress has been made since then. There's now a wave wall to hopefully keep water out.

But the project is still ongoing.
