PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – As the potential threat of Hurricane Matthew looms, South Florida residents are scrambling to get gas ahead of the powerful storm.
Long lines and empty pumps at South Florida gas stations had drivers waking up early Wednesday to top off their tanks.
Judi Lockard said she decided to wake up early to get gas after seeing the long lines at gas stations on Hallandale Beach Boulevard.
"Thank God I did," she told Local 10 News reporter Layron Livingston.
Lockard was at a RaceTrac station in Pembroke Park as a tanker arrived to refill the pumps.
Many drivers waited in long lines and paid premium prices Tuesday afternoon to make sure that they had enough gas in case the storm disrupts service.
"I don't have a choice," driver Mike Johnson said. "I gotta get a little to get me to the next station."
