Newly installed automated gate in Surfside cutting down on traffic, but it has some enemies

SURFSIDE, Fla. — A recently installed gate on a public road is causing a stir in Surfside.

The gate was put up earlier this summer along Abbot Avenue and 88th Street to dissuade speeding drivers from cutting through the residential neighborhood.

Residents who live in the area can get a decal to use the gate for $10.

“We are charging residents who want a decal. If that’s a problem, we are all for waiving that fee,” said Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett.

Burkett also said that there is a possibility for a guard gate that is manned.

For now, they want to find out who has been taking down the gate.

“We are going to find out who (did it),” said Burkett. “For right now, we have to say it’s a coincidence.”
