Moulin Rouge the Musical now playing at Broward Center

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Listen up bohemians and aristocrats!

Moulin Rouge the Musical is high kicking its way to the Broward Center for Performing Arts.

The “spectacular, spectacular” Tony-award winning musical features elite talent, including one South Florida native who is one of the leads.

Danny Burgos stars as “Santiago” in the show. He was born and raised in La Ciudad Que Progresa, in Hialeah!

“Elementary school, Palm Lakes Elementary, it’s still standing because I went to visit. Miami Lakes Middle for middle school and then I graduated from Barbara Goleman Senior High School,” said Burgos.

Danny’s road to the stage was an unlikely one. While working at Cold Stone Creamery, he would sing as customers gave tips.

“I saw this guy who had tipped me just run out of the Cold Stone,” Burgos remembered. “And then he came back in with someone and tipped me again, I sang again, and he ended up being the artistic director of the Miami Street Playhouse. He was like, ‘do you want to be in a musical?’ And I said sure!”

From there he went off to FSU, where he started off with Nursing School, but then quickly changed to musical theatre. During the pandemic though, he finished nursing school and when he’s not touring, he’s working as a registered nurse.

After graduating, he landed his first major role in “Get On Your Feet!” The musical tells the story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan and it was a fitting start for a Miami boy.

“At the end of my audition, the associate director was like, ‘Danny, you’re from Miami aren’t you?’ And I was like, yeah. He said, you can’t fake that accent and not be from Miami,” he said.

Now Danny is traveling across the country, dazzling audiences with his singing, dancing, and acting along with his fellow bohemians.

“It’s like a fever dream. It’s really like getting shot out of a cannon, quite literally!”

Moulin Rouge runs until March 17. For ticket information, click here.
