MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A 10-year-old girl died of leukemia just days after being misdiagnosed with strep throat.
N'Kheyma King of Memphis was suffering from stomach pain when her mother took her to the hospital on March 11.
WMC reports doctors originally diagnosed King with strep throat and gave her an antibiotic shot.
However, 24 hours later, paramedics were called to King's home and she was rushed back to the hospital when the correct diagnosis of leukemia was made.
"When I heard the word Leukemia I was like, we don't have cancer. What are you talking about?" Trayce Tate-Campbell, Nya's grandmother, told WMC. "I'm like, wait a minute. You said the baby had strep throat. What's going on?"
Despite being given a 60 perfect chance of survival, Nya died on March 15, less than a week after the strep throat diagnosis.
Doctors believe King may have had the disease since birth.
A GoFundMe account has been created to help cover Nya's funeral expenses.
