David Di Pietro resigns as Broward Health chairman after winning case against governor

Broward County judge rules that Gov. Rick Scott overstepped boundaries

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Just three days after winning a court case against Gov. Rick Scott to regain his appointed position as chairman of Broward Health, David Di Pietro has resigned that position.

A Broward County judge on Monday ruled that the governor overstepped his boundaries when he suspended Di Pietro for interfering in a state review of the taxpayer-supported public health system and reinstated Di Pietro as chairman.

Di Pietro praised the decision, but sent a letter Thursday morning to Scott to announce that he was stepping down.

He wrote: "Although I have served with honor on the Board, your actions have made it obvious to me that exercising my independent, fiduciary judgment as a Board member is not consistent with your interests ... No matter how hard I may try to fix the problems at Broward Health, it is stifled with so much political interference that my continued membership is utterly futile."

Scott had appealed the court decision. It's unclear whether that appeal will go forward in light of Di Pietro's resignation.
