Gratigny Park Plateu initiative receives generous gift

Walgreens on 119th Street donates $5,000 to help build Gratigny Park

MIAMI – Local 10's Making A Difference effort to build Gratigny Plateau Park has received a generous gift from Walgreens, the nation's largest drug store chain.

The Walgreen's store located at 750 NW 119th Street in Miami-Dade County, which is just one mile east of the park, made a $5,000 donation.  The presentation was held at the store on March 6.  District 2 Commissioner Jean Monestime, who represents the park district, and Jack Kardys, Director of Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces, were on hand to accept the gift. The money will be used to buy a HealthBeat® Chest/Back Press, one of eight fitness stations that will be part of Gratigny Plateau Park's landscape.

"Walgreens has proven its strong commitment to the local community with this donation," said Monestime.  "It is our hope that more companies will step forward to make a fully-developed Gratigny Plateau park a reality."

Along with the fitness stations, Gratigny Plateau Park will feature learning stations, walkways, a toddler playground, butterfly garden and more.  Architectural firm,  EDSA, designed the park to resemble a flower, signaling a new beginning for the families in the area.   Construction is under way and supported through the generosity of individual and corporate donations.  Miller Construction is leading the construction effort.

Through Local 10's nonprofit partner, Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade, donations can be made at mdparks.org or by utilizing Connect2Give, which allows mobile phone users to text "Parks Local 10" to 501501 to donate $10.  The amount is billed directly to the donor's phone bill and is 100 percent tax-deductible.
