Miami-Dade police arrest driver accused of running from crash that killed passenger, hurt 2

Driver remains behind bars after appearing before a Miami-Dade judge on Sunday

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade police announced the arrest of a 28-year-old woman who they said was driving a pickup truck involved in a deadly crash involving multiple vehicles Friday morning.

Dymariz Picon, who lives in west Miami-Dade’s Tamiami area, ran away from the crash scene and left her passenger’s lifeless body behind at Southwest 92nd Avenue and 21st Terrace at around 8:30 a.m., police said.

Authorities identified the deceased passenger Saturday as 34-year-old Daniel Garcia.

Police said Picon hit and critically injured two men in a work van, identified as Alexis Gonzalez Martinez, 30, and Jose G. Perez Estevez, 26, along with several parked vehicles.

Authorities said they had been looking for the Nissan Titan pickup truck in connection with a beer theft at the On the Run convenience store at Southwest 87th Avenue and Coral Way. A Miami-Dade Schools police officer had tried to stop the vehicle, police said, but had lost sight of the truck before the crash.

Police said an unidentified third passenger was in the pickup at the time. Two men had been suspected of committing the gas station theft.

Picon is described in her arrest report as a “habitual traffic offender” who did not have a license at the time of the crash.

The report doesn’t state how authorities located Picon, but it states she was arrested Friday night after confessing to the crime.

She was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on numerous charges, including vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, two counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury and fleeing and eluding.

Picon appeared before a judge on Sunday.

As of Sunday night, she was being held on $275,000 bond. If released, she was ordered by the judge to remain on house arrest and prohibited to drive.
