The National Hurricane Center said Friday a tropical wave off the coast of western Africa had a 40 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression in the next 48 hours.

At 2 p.m. Friday, the system had potential to become a tropical depression as it moved toward the Cape Verde Islands. Forecasters gave it a 40 percent chance of developing.

The system was forecast to bring thunderstorms to parts of the Cape Verde Islands over the next couple of days.

Another system about 650 miles east of the Lesser Antilles remained disorganized, said forecasters, who gave it a 10 percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours.
