Milton leaves extensive damage behind in Tampa Bay area

TAMPA, Fla. – Residents in the Tampa Bay area are surveying the damage left behind by Hurricane Milton.

In north Tampa, a 14-year-old boy was found on a wooden pallet after the area flooded. Crews quickly worked to pull the boy to safety.

Water rescues continue throughout the region after a harsh and stormy night when Hurricane Milton roared ashore.

The wind damage left behind is significant.

Jennifer Dean said the winds picked up out of nowhere, the lights were flickering and she and her family had to move.

“The sky just kept lighting up with the transformers blowing,” she said. “This was worse than Helene. Around midnight we went into the hallway because the winds were so bad.”

5 p.m. report:

The back end of the storm is when things really picked up.

A crane collapsed onto a nearby office building in St. Petersburg, with debris raining down onto the street below.

Another building several blocks away was roped off because authorities fear it’s ready to collapse.

The roof of Tropicana Field, home to Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays, was completely shredded during the storm.

No injuries were reported as assessments of the damage the ballpark sustained remain ongoing.

The National Guard rolled in to start the cleanup process to the area still battered from Hurricane Helene.
