WILTON MANORS, Fla. – The Stonewall Pride street festival is back this weekend in Wilton Manors.
“It’s blocks of fun, food, entertainment,” said Wilton Manors Pride organizer Jameer Baptiste. “We’re in the heart of the gayborhood of Florida.”
It’s been more difficult this year for officials to put on the event as many corporate sponsors have pulled out from Pride events across the country.
“You know, this is important,” said Baptiste. “This is something we’re putting on our calendar to mark our solidarity and our commitment to move forward in our equal rights.”

Additionally, the cost of putting on the events has also gone up, including for security.
For the first time, police will be using metal detectors and all vehicles parked on the parade route will be clamped, in addition to barricades and there will be increased manpower from multiple agencies.
“Aviation, drone units,” said Wilton Manors Police Detective Haley Plant. “We’ll have a lot of people out there watching.”
Plant also reminded the community that it too plays a role in making sure the event is safe for all.
“We’re always there watching, but it helps if the public is aware of their surroundings as well,” said Plant.
While many attend the event for the fun and party atmosphere, it’s also a time to reflect on the roots of the LGBTQ+ movement.
“Back to the time of the rights,” said Baptiste. “You know this is more than just a celebration, it’s all about our unity, it’s all about coming together and showcasing that we are resilient.”
The city of Wilton Manors is expecting upwards of 50,000 people at the 25th anniversary festival.
