Maria Elena Crespo told Local 10 News that her 47-year-old daughter, Yudaisy Salgueiro, was shot by her ex at a complex at 307 NW 72nd Ave., just north of Flagler Street.

Crespo identified the gunman as Javier Albriza Jara, 50. Salgueiro later spoke to Local 10 News.

“I can’t say she’s doing well,” Crespo, speaking in Spanish, said of Salgueiro, who was alert and recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Wednesday.

She described her daughter as “the kind of person who is dedicated to her work and to her family.”

Salgueiro told Local 10 News that Jara shot her in the chest, but a fortunate last-minute movement saved her life.

“I’s incredible because at the distance he fired, aiming for the heart — since I turned, otherwise I’d be dead," she said, saying that Jara’s gun then jammed. “And luckily, the bullets didn’t fire.”

Salgueiro managed to run away, seeking help at a neighbor’s unit. Her mother said Jara then ran to Salgueiro’s apartment on the third floor and shattered a window while trying to look for her.

“They weren’t married, they were together for 10 years and they had separated about a year and a half ago,” Crespo said.

When deputies arrived, Jara went back upstairs to his unit on the fourth floor.

A neighbor recorded video from their window showing the special response team arriving, carrying shields and long guns.

“Deputies responded to the fourth floor, where they discovered a subject armed with a firearm. At which point an exchange of gunfire between the subject and three of our deputies occurred,” said Miami-Dade Assistant Sheriff Eric Garcia.

After the shootout, Jara was later found dead inside.

Whether he died from the deputies’ gunfire or another cause remains under investigation.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is looking into the deputies’ use of force, as is standard procedure.
