MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Authorities on Wednesday released the names of the woman critically wounded and the man who was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in west Miami-Dade after an exchange of gunfire inside an apartment.
Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of 72nd Avenue and Third Street, southeast of the Dolphin-Palmetto interchange.
Deputies said they responded to reports of shots fired just before 4 p.m. and found 46-year-old Yudaisy Salgueiro lying outside with gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
Witnesses directed deputies to a fourth-floor apartment, where they confronted an armed man identified as 50-year-old Javier Albriza Jara, according to investigators.
They said an exchange of gunfire followed before deputies pulled back and waited for the MDSO’s Special Response Team.
When the tactical unit entered the apartment, authorities said Jara was found on the ground and pronounced dead by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
One resident reported hearing about “seven or eight” gunshots.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, as is customary with police shootings.
