HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A young girl and her mother were injured Tuesday when a dog attacked them in a North Miami apartment complex, police said.
They said the dog’s owner was cited for not having the proper tags, shots and paperwork for the animal.
Neighbors said the attack occurred around 4:30 p.m. in a courtyard off Northeast Sixth Avenue near 138th Street and lasted several minutes.
“I saw the dog bite her. I saw the dog bite her and it was terrible,” said Jaqueline, who lives nearby. “She was screaming to death. There was nothing we could do but call the police.”
The dog’s owner told Local 10 News the incident was a “misunderstanding.” He said the victims knew the dog and the girl had only tried to pet it.
Neighbors described the dog as large, but it wasn’t immediately clear who or what managed to stop the attack.
Police said the dog will remain at the owner’s residence under a 10-day quarantine while they continue investigating the circumstances of the incident.
Authorities have not released the ages of the mother or daughter, or breed of the dog involved.
Tuesday’s attack comes eight days after a 71-year-old woman was mauled to death by dogs in Miami Gardens. An investigation into that attack is also ongoing.
