Nail salon slaying suspect faces more charges

Anthawn Ragan Jr charged with 2nd murder, several armed robberies

MIAMI – One of the men accused of killing 10-year-old Aaron Vu during a robbery at a nail salon returned to bond court Saturday on additional murder and armed robbery charges.

Since his arrest on Nov. 26 -- his 19th birthday -- police have charged Anthawn Ragan Jr. with a second murder and several armed robberies.

"He was clearly out of control and nowhere in this system with the help of the public were we able to pull him in and reign him in so he couldn't hurt anybody else," said Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle.

Investigators say Ragan and another man opened fire inside Nail Hong-Kong on Nov. 20, hitting the boy and his father, Hai Nam Vu. He was on the streets because an earlier armed robbery case against him was dropped in July when a witness decided not to cooperate with police.

Ragan's father, Anthawn Ragan Sr., is imprisoned after he was convicted of murder.

His mother, Octavia Rauls, went to federal prison in April for social security fraud. In a letter to the judge, she explained that money helped her raise a troubled son.

"I did everything I was supposed to do for him with only good intentions," she wrote.

Police continue to look for more suspects in the nail salon shooting, the motel murder, and at least one of the armed robberies. Anyone with information on those cases is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
