FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – A Florida City man is facing an attempted murder charge after attacking another man with a machete over the weekend, according to the city’s police department.
Florida City police said Cereste Lavaud, 53, pulled up to a home in the 500 block of Northwest 14th Street in his truck at around midnight Sunday, told the victim to come into the street, then struck him on the head twice with the machete, wounding him.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue medics would take the victim to Baptist Health Homestead Hospital for treatment.
Two witnesses provided the same account of the incident, police said.
After police located Lavaud at West Lucy Street and the South Miami-Dade Busway, he told them that he had gone to Northwest 14th Street to visit his cousin, an arrest report states.
Lavaud claimed that his cousin wasn’t there and the victim “yelled at him to leave and that he was not welcomed,” police wrote.
He claimed after asking the victim why he was not welcomed, the victim came at him with a 2x4 in one hand and a machete in the other, police said. The report states that he told officers that he blocked the machete with a PVC pipe.
However, police said they couldn’t find any of the weapons that Lavaud claimed the victim had.
Jail records show Lavaud was held without bond and remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Monday afternoon.
