BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – South Florida shoppers have been on an egg hunt at local Publix stores after finding empty shelves.

The Lakeland-based grocer said there’s a shortage due to the bird flu outbreak.
Publix released the following statement regarding the shortage:
“We are experiencing shortages on eggs due to the Avian Bird Flu (HPAI), which has created a rise in egg demand. As a result, items in this section have limited availability. We are working to bring these products back as soon as possible. We encourage customers to check back regularly, as our stores are receiving routine deliveries,” said a Publix representative.
On Monday, health officials reported the first U.S. bird flu death in Louisiana.
Since March 2023, 66 confirmed bird flu infections have been reported in the U.S., but previous illnesses have been mild, and most have been detected among farmworkers exposed to sick poultry or dairy cows.
