CORAL GABLES, Fla. – FIFA’s Club World cup kicks off Saturday in Miami Gardens.
FIFA provided a preview of the event Tuesday at their headquarters in Coral Gables.
Inter Miami will play Al Ahly to start things off at Hard Rock Stadium, and several more matches are scheduled to be played there.
The stadium is also set to host international soccer fans for next year’s World Cup.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino answered some questions about the event Tuesday.
“The most important thing for us is to ensure security for all fans,” he said.
Infantino was also asked about immigration concerns.
“I have no concerns about anything in the sense that we’re very attentive of anything regarding security,” he said.
This is also the first big soccer event since last year’s Copa America disaster at Hard Rock Stadium, where hundreds of fans stormed the gates.
“No one should come to the game thinking they can create problems,” said Infantino.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava was also at the event, but left before Local 10 could ask her about the possibility of immigration enforcement. In a statement, she said:
“While this is a decision taken by the federal government, I hope that the focus of all law enforcement is on keeping fans and all residents safe during the Club World Cup this year and the World Cup next year. Our focus is on preparing our community to be the best possible host city we can be and we look forward to welcoming fans.”
