FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 17-year-old boy is facing multiple charges after police say he crashed an SUV into a Fort Lauderdale homeowner’s yard over the weekend, causing thousands of dollars in property damage before fleeing the scene.
Fort Lauderdale police confirmed the arrest of Gilton Alexander Arevalo Juarez, who is now facing four charges, including:
- Driving without a license
- Leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage
- Leaving the scene of a crash involving injuries (a felony)
- Running a stop sign
Police said Arevalo Juarez will be placed on home detention for 21 days, with no contact allowed between him and the victims, witnesses or co-defendants.
He is also prohibited from driving and will be represented by a public defender.
Home surveillance video obtained exclusively by Local 10 News on Wednesday shows the moment an SUV veered off the road and plowed into Argeri Sequeira’s driveway around 2 a.m. Saturday. The impact narrowly missed her home and left deep tire tracks across her lawn.
Sequeira’s Tesla and Cybertruck, which were parked in the driveway on the 1700 block of Southwest 31st Avenue, were heavily damaged. She said both vehicles had to be towed.
“This is pretty devastating,” Sequeira told Local 10’s Linnie Supall. “We started cleaning … but it’s a huge mess over there.”
Home surveillance video obtained exclusively by Local 10 News on Wednesday shows the SUV coming to a stop just feet from the house. Seconds later, two people are seen stumbling out—one of them bleeding from the nose.
The driver was then seen walking around the SUV to assess the damage before getting back in and speeding away, with the vehicle’s bumper barely attached.
Another surveillance angle captured a second car in the roadway after the crash, which is believed to have belonged to an uninvolved driver.
Sequeira said the crash has left her shaken.
“It’s difficult to sleep here after this,” she said. “You’re waiting and expecting another accident in the middle of the night.”
Fort Lauderdale police said one of the SUV’s occupants was transported to Broward Health Medical Center with minor injuries.
Records show Arevalo Juarez’s court hearing is scheduled for July 9 at 9:30 a.m.
