According to investigators, Armando Velasquez, 38, died from “carbon monoxide toxicity.”
MDSO officials said a second man, Reymundo Chavez Garcia, 49, was transported to Jackson South Medical Center in critical condition, where he remains hospitalized as of Wednesday afternoon.
The incident happened around 12:45 a.m. on June 5 at L. Diaz Nursery, located near Southwest 204th Avenue and 232nd Street.
Deputies said they were called to perform a welfare check and spotted an unconscious man through the bedroom window of a trailer on the property.
A woman who works nearby told Local 10 News on the day of the incident that she suspected a possible chemical mishap, noting that the fumigation chemicals used at the nursery are extremely toxic and typically only applied when no workers are present.
MDSO said the agency’s Homicide Unit is investigating the incident.
Authorities have not said whether the carbon monoxide came from fumigation activity or another source.
