Jail records show Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 22-year-old Niejay Omari Cobb Wednesday on multiple charges, including one count each of premeditated attempted murder with a weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, throwing or shooting a deadly missile and illegal use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The arrest comes months after the early morning shooting on July 20, 2024, when deputies responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the area of Southwest 216th Street and 120th Avenue.
Authorities said the system detected 25 gunshots, but officers ultimately recovered more than 100 shell casings of various calibers at the scene.
Deputies said they found 33-year-old Tristum Hobbs suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. He was transported in critical condition to Jackson South Medical Center by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Authorities said surveillance video from Davis Grocery at 21630 SW 120th Ave. showed a white sedan and a dark-colored sedan traveling together northbound and stopping at the intersection at Southwest 216th Street.
They said the video footage revealed individuals exiting both vehicles and opening fire on Hobbs, who was standing nearby before running westbound as the shots rang out.
Authorities said they later located the dark-colored sedan at Princeton Groves Apartments, damaged by gunfire. Glenn Roy Cassis Jr., 25, was arrested that same day after being seen exiting the vehicle.
Investigators said he was carrying a Glock 17 with an extended magazine in his waistband. He was previously charged with attempted premeditated murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, and use of a firearm during a felony, according to records.
Authorities said one home near the 12000 block of Southwest 215th Street was struck by gunfire during the attack while seven people were inside. No one inside the home was physically injured.
A key break in the investigation came from a citizen informant who told detectives they had firsthand knowledge of the shooting and identified Cobb, along with Cassis and two other men named as “Jarrett” and “Vickers” in the report as being directly involved, authorities said.
That information was corroborated by forensic analysis of shell casings and data collected from the suspects’ cellphones and vehicle infotainment systems, investigators said.
Deeper forensic work linked shell casings from the scene to other shootings across Miami-Dade County this year, according to authorities.
As of Thursday, Cobb is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
