Mother charged after 2-year-old shot himself says nothing while leaving jail

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A Miami Gardens woman is facing two felony charges after police said her 2-year-old son shot himself with a gun left in her purse.

Miami Gardens police took Christina Monique Doyle, 33, into custody on Monday, five days after the shooting.

It happened just after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in an apartment complex parking lot at 21001 NW 22nd Ave., police said.

According to an arrest report, Doyle was in her car with her son and her cousin’s 8-year-old son. Doyle told investigators that “she suddenly heard a loud bang” as she was backing into a parking spot and realized her son had shot himself in the right leg, it states.

Medics took the boy to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

“I observed a black handgun stuck between the driver seat and the center console as well as a black holster (lying) on the rear passenger side seat,” a Miami Gardens police officer wrote.

Police said during a forensic interview at Kristi House, the other boy told a staff member at the children’s advocacy center that the 2-year-old was “crawling throughout the vehicle before he shot himself.”

Officers arrested Doyle after she came to the Miami Gardens Police Department on Monday to provide a statement, which was redacted from the report.

Doyle, facing charges of child neglect causing great bodily harm and culpable negligence, left jail Tuesday night after being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $5,000 bond.

She had nothing to say before getting into a vehicle outside the jail.
